Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum to open exhibition on African fashion

Published
Aug 30, 2017

One of Amsterdam's largest museums, Tropenmuseum (Museum of the Tropics) will open Fashion Cities Africa, an exhibition based on African fashion, on 6 October 2017. For the exhibition, the museum is working closely with both African designers and Dutch designers of African descent.

Fashion Cities Africa focuses on the fashion scenes of Johannesburg, Cassablanca, Lagos and Nairobi and aims to demonstrate the diversity of the continent. Featured work will be from designers such as The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) and womenswear label Maki Oh (Lagos).

In addition to continental designers, the exhibition will also show the works of Dutch designers of African descent, including Daily Paper, DoruNsimba, Karim Adduchi and Lady Africa.

The Tropenmuseum is an ethnographic museum, based in Amsterdam. The museum was founded in 1864, and, until 2014 was owned and operated by Royal Tropical Institute, a foundation that sponsored the study of tropical cultures around the world.
