NEW YORK, Dec 1, 2008 (AFP) - Fancy sports shoes were declared off limits at New York prisons from Monday as authorities sought to reduce friction between fashion conscious inmates.

The Correction Department banned snazzy sneakers and issued prisoners with identical canvas shoes costing two dollars a pair, the Daily News reported.

"This is another step in reducing and controlling inmate-inmate violence, particularly among adolescents who do fight over brand sneakers," prisons spokesman Stephen Morello was quoted as saying.

New York prisoners mostly wear their own clothes, rather than uniforms.
