John Lewis’s weekly sales may have been sluggish in recent periods but Black Friday saw some pent-up demand being unleashed as the company said it saw 495 units being ordered online per minute between 07:00 and 08:00.

The company said this was its biggest shopping hour online so far, presumably as Britons woke up and decided to shop before heading into work or school.

And many of them used the retailer’s app with Black Friday app shopping up 36.8% compared to a year ago. The company also noted that smartphone shopping is on the rise with a 9% increase so far.

The retailer has seen brisk business for beauty products with its bestsellers on Friday including Creed Aventus Eau de Parfum, despite its hefty £207.00 price tag, as well as Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, which it is selling for £13.60.

However, no fashion product appears to have made it into its bestseller list just yet. Instead, electricals are the main focus. Its top seller by value is a 55-inch LG Smart TV at £1,399, with the biggest volume being seen for the Sonos Play 1 Smart Speaker at £149. It has been selling 19 a minute on average.

In its Home directory, its biggest seller so far is the John Lewis Sacha Sofa Bed, starting from £699.
