Dutch marketplace and e-commerce website Marktplaats, a subsidiary of eBay, announced that its CEO Olivier van Duijn will be leaving the company on 1 November. Van Duijn's successor will be announced in the coming weeks.

Marktplaats said in a press release that in recent years, under the direction of Van Duijn, the company has transformed from a successful digital bulletin board for used products to a well-performing e-commerce website that records more than 8 million unique visitors per month. The new direction of the platform has yielded a 20 percent growth of traffic in the last year. Additionally, the company has also seen an increased growth on the Belgian market, where it operates under the name 2dehands.be.

Olivier van Duijn, CEO at Marktplaats, said in a press release: “I have been working at eBay [parent company of Marktplaats] for eight years now and I have experienced several cycles within Marktplaats and 2dehands.be. The last three years were especially interesting, because of the enormous transformation that the whole organization experienced. With the strong growth of e-commerce and social media, we saw a rapidly changing pattern of expectations among consumers a few years ago. Marktplaats had to help users to become more active on the platform. This has led to numerous innovations that make buying and selling via Marktplaats even easier and faster.”

Marktplaats was founded in 1999 and was the first Dutch website where consumers were able to buy and sell online. Since 2004, the Amsterdam-based company has been part of eBay. Today, the platform attracts 2.1 million visitors per day and an average of 350,000 new products or services are offered on the website every day, ranging from clothing and collectibles to cars and furniture.
