PARIS, June 6, 2009 (AFP) - Two Montenegrins, suspected members of the "Pink Panther" of jewellery shop raiders, were jailed by a French court Friday 5 June on charges relating to forged papers.

Nicolai Ivanovic, 36, and Zoran Kostic, 39, were jailed for 24 and 10 months respectively. French police had arrested the pair in a Paris hotel for possession of false passports.

Swiss police had tipped off France's organised crime squad, the BRB, to the two men's presence in France.

Police said the two men were senior figures in the so-called Pink Panther gang, and had several international arrest warrants out on them, from Switzerland, Monaco and Montenegro.

Police said that Kostic was one of the leaders of the gang, which has been blamed for robberies in Monaco, France, Germany and Switzerland.

Both men said virtually nothing in the Paris court and when they did speak, spoke in Serbo-Croat.
