As Black Friday sees a surge in popularity in the Netherlands, so too has online shopping for the annual event.

The number of online payments was up 47% in 2018, according to Dutch e-commerce payment system Ideal, which processes online payments for all Dutch banks. The 3.5 million payments handled by the platform set a new record for the number of online payments made in a single day, and generated online revenue of €275.5 million, up from €207 million in 2017.

Still, Dutch shoppers didn’t neglect the high street, provisional figures from Betaalvereniging Nederland (the Dutch Payments Association) showed. The number of debit card payments made in physical stores was up 21% year-on-year, making for a total revenue of €475 million. That was a 12% increase over 2017’s €424 million, although not enough of a rise to break any prior records: the highest previous revenue attributed to debit card payments made in physical stores in a single day was €521 million, reported on 23 December 2017.

Betaalvereniging Nederland’s figures are based on an estimate for the entire country based on the figures of the transaction processor EquensWorldline. Cash and credit card payments are not included in the provisional figures reported by the association.
