L'Oréal's Clarisonic brand to shut down

Published
Jul 16, 2020

Clarisonic, the L'Oréal-owned skin care brand known for its once-massively popular and oft-lauded facial cleansing brushes, is going out of business.

The brand announced on its website that it will be shutting down as of September 30, and said that the "decision was made so that L'Oréal can focus its attention on its other core business offerings." All of the brand's products, including devices, brush heads and attachments, will be sold at 50% off as part of a "last chance sale" through the Clarisonic website and the brand's authorized retailers.

The brand's products will be available at retailers like Amazon, QVC, Sephora and Ulta while supplies last. Once these items sell out, the brand's products will no longer be made by any manufacturer or retailer.

"After more than a decade of game-changing innovation and industry-leading technology, the Clarisonic brand will be shutting down," the brand wrote in an Instagram post. "We want to thank all of our loyal customers, dermatologists, and retail partners who have helped put this brand on the map. It has been our absolute pleasure to serve you all these years."

Founded in 2001, Clarisonic was acquired by L'Oréal from Pacific Bioscience Laboratories in 2011. Riding a wave of success, the brand reportedly generated $100 million in annual sales in 2010.

However, the brand began to slip shortly after the change in ownership, potentially as a result of waning popularity, over-saturation and the brand's dependence on its star product - the cleansing brushes - which only require a single purchase and then depend on brush replacement purchases, according to industry reports. In 2016, the brand announced that it would lay off 120 employees throughout the year, as it moved to outsource production.

Clarisonic said that it will honor select product warranties up until October 31, 2022, and that all Clarisonic Rewards loyalty accounts will become inactive on 10/1/2020.
