Mondadori, Lagardère and Marie Claire are working on a project to regroup their French periodicals in a new press entity within a year. The possible alliance aims to tackle the difficulties currently faced by the printed press, Italian business newspaper Milano Finanza reports.

The rumour, which saw Mondadori shares climb over 5% to 2.36 euros on the Milan stock exchange at lunchtime on Wednesday, is based on the three group's ongoing negotiations concerning the French market.

The newly-created entity would be worth about a billion euros, according to Mediobanca securities, which added up the revenue of the three groups (380-400 million at Lagardère, 300 million at Mondadori and the same for Marie Claire).

At a later stage, the company could join the French stock exchange, according to Milano Finanza, citing financial sources. Contacted by AFP, none of the three titles wished to comment.
