Moynat opens New York store

Published
Mar 29, 2016

The Moynat brand, owned by the Arnault Group's family holding company and with stores in Paris, London, Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo, has now opened its sixth boutique, the first in New York, at 937 Madison Avenue (Moynat was already available with a limited range at Manhattan's Dover Street Market).

It is an ideal location for the luxury brand, inside the old Whitney Brownstones building, whose façade, now fully restored, dates back to 1876. The building is surrounded by art galleries, boutique hotels, an Apple store and soon by the exhibition halls of the Met Breuer Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Contemporary collection.

The new shop extends over 200 m² on two levels, and was designed by architect Gwenaël Nicolas, the director of Tokyo-based Curiosity architecture and design studio, which was commissioned with the creation of all of Moynat's stores.

Beneath a cathedral-like ceiling, with a metal arch bringing to mind a trunk's components, the area features a glass column showcasing vintage Moynat trunk models. From the column, a staircase descends to a private lounge hosting customisation services, from hand-painted initials to bespoke handbags and trunks.

The Madison Avenue store also presents new collaborations, in addition to women's and men's handbags and accessories collections. Creative Director Ramesh Nair will showcase his joint project with New York artist Daniel Arsham, after those with Yannick Alléno and Pierre Hermé, and with pop singer Pharrell Williams.

Arsham's work blends art, architecture and performance. He was, among others, sought out by Hedi Slimane to design the fitting rooms of Dior's Los Angeles store, and he collaborates with choreographer Merce Cunningham. Daniel Arsham's artworks are currently exhibited in the world's top museums, and he has now signed a first capsule collection for Moynat.

He has worked on a trompe l’œil, perforated motif for tote bags and notebook covers, which are exclusively featured at the Madison Avenue store.

In addition to this collaboration, Ramesh Nair will also present an exclusive new clutch bag model called 'Opéra', in homage to the Opéra Garnier building which overlooked Moynat's first Paris store. The clutch bag is offered in a leather box and is available in a crocodile and a bullock hide version.

In addition, the 'Danse bag' model will be exclusively available in New York for one month. It is a travel bag "inspired by the grace and discipline of dance classes", featuring Belle Époque details.
