The development of the new Fendi facility at Capannuccia, in the town of Bagno a Ripoli, near Florence, has taken a major step forward. The town council unanimously approved the zoning change proposal which reinstated manufacturing as the area’s primary destination of use. The project of building nearly 300 flats on the site occupied by an abandoned industrial furnace has been shelved.

Mayor Francesco Casini and urban planning councillor Paolo Frezzi said they are “extremely satisfied, as the unanimous vote is proof of the fondness there is for this area, and of how important this project is. All political forces, across party lines, recognised Fendi’s investment as a genuine opportunity for our region, both in terms of employment and for the environment. New jobs will be created, an abandoned site in a state of extreme disrepair will be regenerated, via a sustainable architecture project that will enhance the landscape. We now await the final approval.”

The final decision will be taken by next March, allowing for an assessment of the project and for any counter-arguments. Fendi will then be able to buy the title deed in order to build its new facility.

At Capannuccia, Fendi plans to deploy a production and materials R&D hub as well as a training centre for young artisans. Fendi’s intervention will also mean renewed urbanisation for Capannuccia, with the creation of a public park and parking facilities. Fendi presented its plans at a recent meeting with local inhabitants, and announced that the goal is to open the new facility by the end of 2020.
