Southeast Asian e-commerce company Lazada has announced the appointment of Pierre Poignant as CEO. He will take over from Lucy Peng, who will continue to serve as executive director.

Pierre Poignant, who previously held the position of executive chairman, is among those who co-founded the Singapore e-commerce website in 2012 under the Rocket Internet umbrella. It has since been firmly established in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In fact, the company's key positioning, pushed Chinese giant Alibaba to buy Rocket Internet for a billion dollars in 2016, in order to accelerate its activity in the area.

Now, backed by a new contribution - a one-billion-dollar investment in the portal – it has appointed Poignant, a graduate of Polytechnique and MIT, as CEO.

"Pierre is a respected Lazada co-founder, who has been tirelessly contributing to society for six years," said Lucy Peng.

"He and the team of co-founders had this vision of building our logistics network from scratch, when no one in Southeast Asia believed in e-commerce. This valuable asset now distinguishes us from the competition. Over the years, Pierre has always gone beyond his duty and has excelled in every roles he has assumed.”

Lazada provides a general offer, ranging mainly from beauty and fashion, to electronics, sports and food. Some 145,000 vendors sell on the platform, offering products from more than 3,000 brands to an audience of 600,000 million consumers. The website focuses on speedy delivery, via a logistics network relying specifically on one hundred local partners.
