Primaloft launches first recycled, biodegradable synthetic insulating fibre

On October 23, the US specialist in insulating textiles Primaloft has announced the launch of the Primaloft Bio range, its first synthetic insulating fibre that is made entirely with recycled yarns and is highly biodegradable.

The new fibre’s decomposition rate is reportedly 75.9% - Primaloft

The fibre was tested for 365 days in a landfill and has a reported decomposition rate of 75.9%, while the degradation rate of a standard polyester fibre in a similar environment would be between 1% and 2% only. Primaloft stated that the way the fibre is produced doesn’t affect its performance and resistance. Instead, Primaloft Bio has been made more attractive in the long-term for the microbes present in landfills and in marine environments.

It took four years to develop the production process for Primaloft Bio, and the manufacturer said it called on the know-how of Dr Charles Lancelot, a plastic industry specialist. Primaloft’s goal is for consumers to be able to buy products made using the new fibre - primarily marketed by lifestyle and outdoor brands - from 2020.

Primaloft’s most convincing argument in promoting the new fibre is that in 2017, the USA generated about 35.4 billion tons of textile waste. Making synthetic fabrics biodegradable has been a major concern for the textile industry in the last two decades, spawning products like Ciclo’s biodegradable polyester and the Amni Soul Eco polyamide by the Solvay group.
