The IFM launches fashion doctorate degree with Paris' Pantheon-Sorbonne University

The first contemporary fashion doctorate degree in France, dedicated to fashion theory and practice, will soon be available to study in Paris. The course boasts a multidisciplinary structure, addressing the economics and culture of the fashion sector, in all its diversity and in a global context. Program creators, the IFM (Institut Français de la Mode) and the Paris university Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris 1), claim the new research curriculum is a "global exception," embracing luxury and fashion in all aspects.

IFM

For IFM, the course is a first in terms of curriculum length too, with the program serving as the highest path of education on offer as part of the IFM's training schedule. The education provider will co-operate with the Pantheon-Sorbonne University from the end of 2017, when the program will kick off in December.

After the application phase, which ends October 30, selected students will attend several study session, in parallel to writing their thesis: modules are to be held daily or weekly covering several major themes including 'sociology, philosophy and anthropology in fashion', 'economics and management', 'historiography' and 'legal approaches and sustainable development. In total, the course involves 192 hours of instruction time.

The new curriculum will therefore be aimed at applicants who can demonstrate a level of education equivalent to a Master II and will constitute "a unique academic continuation", based on "the unique position of France and Paris, the capital of fashion and haute couture," according to the two institutions.
